Corberán: "We're going to do whatever it takes"
The coach's pre-match press conference
Carlos Corberán spoke on Friday ahead of LaLiga Matchday 19, in which Valencia CF face Elche CF at Mestalla.
His continuation
Tomorrow is an important game for the club, the team, and the fans, and we are approaching it with motivation and a sense of responsibility. Nothing has been said about anything else.
His opinion on “Corberán, resign” signs amongst fans at the airport
That's part of the current situation, the team's position in the standings, and the frustration the fans may be feeling. We have to accept and understand it; it's part of the job. I know and understand the demands that come with being the coach of Valencia CF, and you can't be in this role if you can't live with those demands.
Diakhaby's surgery
It's a shame, because he's an important player for us. He had just recovered from an injury to the same muscle, and now he's suffered another injury -in a different area but on the same leg. The surgery was successful, we wish him all the best, and the club will be looking to fill that position in the transfer market.
His opinion on Elche's Germán Valera
I appreciate him very much. I only worked with him for a short time. As soon as I arrived, the option arose for him to go out on loan and get playing time in the Segunda División. It was agreed upon with the club and the player. He's a very hard worker and he needed all the honesty possible in our treatment of him, and we're happy that he's achieved this level of performance and is an important player for them.
Sadiq being ready to compete
He'll be called up tomorrow because he's registered with LaLiga. Sadiq is a different type of player than what we already have; he has different characteristics than what we already have in attack. He's very positive, and I know he's coming in with the desire and ambition to do his best and help the team achieve our objective.
The need for improvement from some players
I don't see any players who are switched off; I see players who, within the options a coach gives them, try to contribute to the team. I'm very happy with Danjuma's contribution in the last few matches. It's necessary to have players who contribute both when they start and when they come on from off the bench. That's key to achieving results.
Players out for the game
Unfortunately, Diakhaby's recovery will take more than four months; that's the timeframe, and it's unlikely he'll play again this season. We'll see what the lineup will be tomorrow. Julen Aguirrezabala and Diakhaby are out compared to the last match, and we've brought in Sadiq.
Whether he would resign if the results don't come
I'm focused on turning things around. I have the same energy as the first day I arrived, and I'd say I even have a bit more anger, because I don't like seeing Valencia CF where we are. We're going to do whatever it takes.
Making clear to players whether they will be used
One wasn't getting the playing time he wanted; he had an option for a transfer, and in that moment that was the best thing for him. We need to strengthen the squad. That means bringing in players, not letting them go.
Signing one or two centrebacks
Right now, we need to bring in a centreback. Then we'll see what the circumstances are and how the window unfolds. Signing a centreback is a priority. The coach always wants to have the players come in as soon as possible.
The objective being to avoid relegation
The objective is to turn around our current situation and get better results, and we have to get the three points. There's no point thinking beyond that. The game is going to be very hard-fought; we have to put on a very good performance to get three points which are very important for us.
The atmosphere at Mestalla
We want to be a Valencia CF that play with determination, and unleash that passion we all have tomorrow. We want to be able to handle ourselves in the difficult moments of the game against opponents who take risks to keep the ball. We have to manage that desire to go for the win well. We want to see a strong Valencia CF, with a lot of desire, and transmit that to the fans in the stadium.
The transfer market
All details regarding positions or profiles should remain internal.
Knowing the team better than last year
I always think it's positive. What's different is that we have to face this situation. We have the experience; we did it last time by facing reality head-on, taking it one game at a time, and there's no other secret to achieving it again.
Assessment of the match against Elche CF
Tomorrow's match is extremely important for us. We don't want to see Valencia CF where we are right now. We know what we represent and what we want. We don't like being where we are at the moment.
Patience on and off the pitch
Elche do things differently than other opponents. They're a team who want possession of the ball and use everyone from the goalkeeper to the striker, taking risks, with behaviours and positioning that will be uncomfortable. They're a team who specialise in keeping possession and overcoming pressure. We must be mentally strong to cope with the demands and the challenges ahead.
Dimitrievski
He's been able to train without any problems, without pain, and he's ready to help the team tomorrow. The situation in certain positions is different from others. You can change a striker or a winger, but there's always more stability in goal. We don't usually see changes there, and the goalkeeper has to live with that. There are positions where getting consistent playing time is more likely than in others. From the first day of preseason, I've been satisfied with the level of play from Valencia CF's goalkeepers.
The current situation
It's not a comfortable time; it's demanding. It's part of the job, and we have to live with it. We suffer, we feel that frustration, and that makes us even more determined to turn things around.
